   silymarin and hepatoprotection in veterinary medicine

چکیده    Silymarin, a flavonolignan complex extracted from silybum marianum (milk thistle), has been widely studied for its hepatoprotective properties in both human and veterinary medicine. its bioactive compounds, including silibinin, isosilybin, silychristin, and silydianin, exhibit potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic, and membrane-stabilizing activities. these effects are primarily mediated through scavenging of free radicals, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and modulation of intracellular signaling pathways related to apoptosis and inflammation. in veterinary practice, hepatic disorders represent a significant clinical challenge, particularly in dogs and cats with chronic hepatitis, toxic hepatopathies, and cholestatic diseases. several experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated that silymarin supplementation improves hepatic enzyme profiles (alt, ast, alp, ggt), enhances glutathione concentrations, and promotes hepatocellular regeneration. moreover, in ruminants, silymarin has been reported to mitigate aflatoxin-induced hepatotoxicity, reduce oxidative stress markers, and improve overall productivity parameters such as milk yield and feed efficiency. despite its promising effects, bioavailability of silymarin is limited due to poor water solubility and extensive enterohepatic circulation. recent advancements, such as complexation with phosphatidylcholine (phytosome technology) and nanoparticle-based formulations, have significantly improved absorption and clinical efficacy in veterinary patients. overall, silymarin represents a valuable phytopharmaceutical agent in the management of hepatopathies in companion and farm animals. however, further controlled clinical trials are required to establish optimal dosing regimens, long-term safety, and potential drug–herb interactions, particularly in patients receiving concurrent hepatotoxic or immunosuppressive therapies.
