Epilepsy is a neurological condition involving the brain that makes people more susceptible to having recurrent seizures. it is one of the most common disorders of the nervous system and affects people of all ages, races, and ethnic background1. approximately 700,000 million turkish citizens live with epilepsy. anything that interrupts the normal connections between nerve cells in the brain can cause a seizure. this includes a high fever, low blood sugar, high blood sugar, alcohol or drug withdrawal, or a brain concussion. under these circumstances, anyone can have one or more seizures. however, when a person has two or more seizures, he or she is considered to have epilepsy1. there are many possible causes of epilepsy, including an imbalance of nerve-signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters, tumors, strokes, and brain damage from illness or injury, or some combination of these. in the majority of cases, there may be no cause that can be discovered for epilepsy.in this study, the effect of the extract obtained from rhodiola plant roots on pentatetrazole-induced epileptic seizures in experimental animals was investigated. in herbal medicine, the part of the plant used is its root. although there are several types of rhodiola, only rhodiola rosea, a plant of the crassulaceae family, contains compounds of interest such as rosavins, salidroside, tyrosol and phenolic acids2. the animals used in the experimental study were divided into two groups as first group control group (n= 8) and second group experimental group (n= 8). all studies were performed under anaesthesia. urethane was used as anaesthesia agent.1 g of urethane was weighed and dissolved in 4cc distilled water, then a 25% solution was prepared at a dose of 1.25g/kg before the surgical procedure and administered intraperitoneally (i.p).after the animals were anaesthetised one by one, surgical procedures were performed. the skull bone was cut from the parietal region and removed up to the brain tissue. then the control group animals were fixed to the sterotaxis device and epilepsy seizures were induced by injecting 2.5 microlitres(µl) of pentylenetetrazole directly into the brain tissue. epilepsy seizures were recorded for 120 minutes with biopac mp 100 device. after all animals in the control group were completed in this way, the experimental group animals were started. the experimental group animals were injected with 2.5 microlitres(µl) of the plant extract obtained from the root of the rhodiola rossa plant directly into the brain tissue 10 minutes after the onset of epilepsy seizures induced by pentylentetrazole as in the control group, and epilepsy seizures were recorded for 120 minutes with the biopac mp 100 device. then, statistical analyses of the recordings were performed and the strength (amplitude) and frequency of epileptic seizures of the control group and the experimental group were compared. we observed that rhodiola plant extract significantly suppressed epileptic seizures. as can be seen from the table above, there is a 44% reduction in the frequency of epilepsy attacks as well as epilepsy. there is a 66% decrease in the power of epileptic seizures. the total number of frequencies decreased from 578 to 284 in 2 hours, a 44 per cent decrease.the amplitude decreased from 364 mv to 241 mv in 120 minutes. the decrease is 66 per cent.
