   essential oils in veterinary medicine: natural solutions for animal well-being

چکیده    Essential oils are volatile and aromatic mixtures derived from natural sources, typically composed of multiple bioactive compounds. in recent years, their antimicrobial effects, contributions to wound healing, respiratory support via inhalation, mood-regulating properties, and insect-repellent activity have increased their relevance in veterinary medicine. başer and franz classified essential oils for veterinary use into five categories: attractants, repellents, insecticidal/antiparasitic agents, feed additives, and therapeutic agents in disease management. these versatile biological properties highlight essential oils not only as supportive agents but also as promising alternatives for protective and therapeutic applications. for instance, the resistance of major ectoparasites to commonly used synthetic insecticides, along with the negative environmental and animal health impacts of these chemicals, has intensified the search for natural alternatives. in this context, essential oils have emerged as eco-friendly and effective agents showing acaricidal, insecticidal, repellent, and ovicidal effects against a wide range of ectoparasites such as lice, mange mites, ticks, and flies. tea tree, lavender, thyme, clove, and cinnamon oils, in particular, have demonstrated significant mortality and ovicidal activity in both in vitro and in vivo studies. antimicrobial investigations further support their therapeutic potential. oils from cinnamon, clove, mint, thyme, and basil exhibited strong inhibitory activity against major bacterial pathogens including escherichia coli, salmonella spp., pseudomonas aeruginosa, campylobacter spp., staphylococcus spp., streptococcus spp., and enterococcus spp.. likewise, antifungal activity has been reported, with oregano, tea tree, thyme, cinnamon, and litsea oils showing notable efficacy against microsporum canis, trichophyton mentagrophytes, malassezia pachydermatis, aspergillus spp., and sporothrix brasiliensis. another important application of essential oils is in animal nutrition. following the 2006 ban on antibiotic growth promoters in the european union, essential oils have gained attention as natural feed additives. their incorporation into feed not only supports animal health but also helps mitigate the risks associated with antimicrobial resistance. in conclusion, essential oils represent versatile, sustainable, and effective agents in veterinary practice. their broad-spectrum antimicrobial and antiparasitic properties, combined with their potential as feed additives, underline their importance as natural alternatives to conventional chemicals.
