Resveratrol is a naturally occurring stilbene polyphenol present in grapes, berries, peanuts, and red wine. in recent years, it has gained increasing attention in veterinary medicine due to its strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, and anticancer properties. the pharmacological activities of resveratrol are mainly mediated through the activation of sirt1, inhibition of nf-κb, and modulation of mapk signaling pathways, which together contribute to the reduction of oxidative stress, suppression of inflammatory responses, and delay of cellular aging. studies in veterinary medicine have reported a variety of potential applications. in dogs, experimental and clinical findings indicate that resveratrol exerts anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects in the management of osteoarthritis, while also supporting metabolic functions in age-related disorders. in cats, its antioxidant properties help to counteract oxidative damage and maintain metabolic balance. in farm animals, dietary resveratrol supplementation has been associated with improved immune responses, reduced oxidative stress markers, and, in some cases, enhanced reproductive performance. additional experimental data suggest potential roles in the management of metabolic syndrome, obesity, and infectious diseases. despite these promising results, one of the main limitations of resveratrol is its low oral bioavailability and rapid metabolism, which significantly restrict its clinical efficacy. to overcome this challenge, new formulations such as nanoencapsulation and structural derivatives are being investigated to improve its absorption and stability. in conclusion, resveratrol appears to be a promising nutraceutical and pharmacological agent for use in veterinary internal medicine, particularly in inflammatory, metabolic, and degenerative conditions. however, further well-designed controlled trials are necessary to establish optimal dosages, long-term safety, and clinical effectiveness across different animal species.
