effects of oregano oil on diarrhea, immunity and performance in young ruminants

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the use of aromatic plants and their essential oils as feed additives in animal nutrition. one of the main reasons for this trend is the ban in the european union on the use of antibiotic growth promoters as feed additives, citing their potential to contribute to the development of resistance in pathogens. the potential negative effects of chemical additives on both animal and human health has increased interest in natural plant-based additives. studies have found therapeutic properties of oregano essential oil, including antimicrobial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. these properties further strengthen the potential use of oregano oil in the livestock sector. a review of the existing literature indicates that oregano essential oil does not have a negative effect on performance, immune function, or diarrhea in young ruminants, while some studies report limited positive effects. however, inconsistencies in the findings highlight the need for more comprehensive and controlled studies on the subject. this review examines current research on the use of oregano essential oil in young ruminants.
