Abstract
the present study aimed to measure the readability level of the textbooks 'chemistry (1)'and 'chemistry (2)' of the second secondary school, based on two valid quantitativereadability indices: flash and gunning fogg. this research is of an applied type and has adescriptive-analytical structure. the study population was the full text of the aforementionedbooks and the selected samples included the beginning, middle, and end parts of each book.for each sample, criteria such as the number of sentences, average sentence length, numberof difficult words (with more than four syllables or specialized vocabulary), number ofsyllables, and their ratio to the entire text were extracted. then, using flash and gunningreadability formulas, the difficulty level of the texts was determined. the findings showedthat the average flash readability score for the book chemistry (1) was (9.76) and for thebook chemistry (2) was (9.42). in both cases, the level of readability was found to be muchlower than what tenth and eleventh grade students could easily understand. also, the averagegunning index for chemistry (1) was (12.15) and for chemistry (2) was (12.38), indicatingthat the level of education required to understand them was at the university level and notjust high school. . in addition, the analysis of the sequence of texts showed that the principleof 'from simple to difficult' was not systematically followed in the compilation of the book, and the sentences were often long and had a lot of specialized vocabulary
