the importance of green chemistry and its education in sustainability and environmental protection

chemistry, known as one of the important and effective sciences in improving humanquality of life, is also considered one of the main reason of pollution and environmentaldegradation. the natural environment of the earth has been significantly affected byurbanization and industrialization; therefore, the effort to improve environmentalsustainability and, subsequently, social and economic sustainability is one of the main goalsof experts in this field. a closer look reveals that chemistry will play an important role inachieving these goals, and chemists have a great responsibility to reduce globalenvironmental impacts. the emergence of new branches such as green chemistry andnanotechnology has opened new doors for effective solutions for scientists. green chemistryincludes the design and synthesis of environmentally safe chemical processes, greenapproaches to minimize or remediate environmental pollution, the development ofbiomaterials, biofuels, bioenergy production, biocatalysis, and policies and ethics related togreen chemistry. this article reviews the general principles of green chemistry, its goals andchallenges, teacher training, with the insight of green chemistry for students as an effort topreserve the environment as one of the goals of sustainable development.
