physics as a vehicle to chemistry understanding: the role of physics concept to improve students’ learning of chemistry phenomena - a qualitative systematic review

Authors
Abstract    a deep understanding of chemical phenomena is incomplete without grounding infundamental physics concepts such as energy, particle motion, thermodynamic equilibrium, and quantum structure. however, in most educational systems, physics and chemistry aretaught as separate disciplines, neglecting their conceptual interconnections. this separationoften results in misconceptions such as the belief that “energy is consumed” in chemicalreactions, confusion between heat and temperature, and misunderstanding of entropy andthermodynamic balance. this study aimed to examine the role of teaching physics conceptsin deepening learners’ understanding of chemical phenomena. the research followed aqualitative design using a systematic review approach. data were collected from reputabledatabases including scopus, web of science, eric, google scholar, and two persiandatabases, noormags and magiran, covering the years 2010–2024. the inclusion criteriafocused on studies that directly explored the relationship between teaching physics andlearning chemistry. findings revealed that integrated instruction—through mentalmodeling, computer-based simulations, and phenomenon-based learning—significantlyenhances conceptual understanding, reduces misconceptions, and promotesinterdisciplinary scientific thinking. overall, the results demonstrate that integrating physicsinstruction into chemistry education is not only feasible but also educationally essential.therefore, curriculum revision, teacher professional development, and the creation ofinterdisciplinary educational resources are strongly recommended. such integration fostersmore coherent, meaningful, and sustainable learning in the natural sciences by helpingstudents construct unified mental models of physical and chemical processes.
