Abstract
the present study aimed to explore chemistry students’ perceptions of the relevance ofchemistry to everyday life and its impact on their motivation and choice of major. aqualitative research design based on interpretive phenomenology was employed to gain anin-depth understanding of students’ lived experiences regarding the application of chemicalconcepts in real-life contexts. data were collected through semi-structured interviews withtwelve chemistry students and analyzed using thematic analysis. findings revealed thathands-on experiences and recognition of real-world applications of chemistry—in areassuch as food, household products, environmental issues, and energy—play a crucial role infostering intrinsic motivation, positive attitudes, and meaningful learning. conversely, abstract concepts, traditional teaching methods, and the gap between theory and practicewere identified as major barriers to learning motivation. the results suggest that chemistryeducation becomes more effective and sustainable when conceptual knowledge is integratedwith practical and social applications. furthermore, interactive learning environments andstrong teacher–student engagement enhance students’ motivation, sense of achievement, and professional responsibility. these insights highlight the need for curricular reform andthe incorporation of experiential learning strategies to make chemistry education morerelevant and inspiring
