a systematic review of international experiences in chemistry education for reducing energy consumption and strategies for local adaptation

Authors
Abstract    the rapid growth of energy consumption and its environmental impacts underscore theneed to rethink high school chemistry education through a sustainability lens. this studysystematically analyzes international experiences in chemistry education aimed atreducing energy use and proposes localization strategies for iran, using a systematicreview with narrative–thematic synthesis. searches of domestic and internationaldatabases (1980–2025) identified 58 records; 42 sources (28 peer-reviewed articles, 7official reports, 7 case studies) met inclusion criteria. six intervention categoriesemerged: integrating green chemistry principles into coursework; energy-efficient,microscale laboratory practices; school-based energy audits; digital activities andsimulations; teacher professional development; and school–community partnerships.across studies, these interventions concurrently improved students’ conceptualunderstanding of energy, strengthened conservation attitudes and behaviors, anddelivered operational reductions in resource use; several programs reported roughly 10–30% reductions in instructional energy consumption. for localization, we recommenda microscale experiment kit aligned with grades 10–12 chemistry, classroom energyaudits, an energy-efficient laboratory protocol, teacher communities of practice, and theuse of objective metrics with public display of consumption data. limitations includeheterogeneous outcome measures, scarce direct kwh reporting, and short follow-upperiods. overall, aligning content, pedagogy, and the learning environment—supportedinstitutionally—offers a measurable pathway to “better learning with lowerconsumption” in secondary chemistry education.
