Abstract
this study sought to identify and analyze prevalent student misconceptions about fourelementary chemical concepts: atomic number, mass number, atomic mass, and molarmass. employing the analytical-descriptive research design, data were collected from avalidated conceptual questionnaire (cronbach's α = 0.87) administered to a stratifiedsample of 120 chemistry, basic sciences, and chemistry education students at differentuniversities across iran. the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics andqualitative content analysis. the results showed that the most prevalent misconceptionswere the application of mass number instead of atomic mass and misinterpretation ofmolar mass as the weight of one atom. furthermore, students' quantitative problemsolving abilities particularly in stoichiometry were significantly lower than their levelof theoretical conceptual mastery. the results indicate that an integrated instructionalapproach combining structured conceptual instruction, diverse numerical examples, andtargeted laboratory exercises can effectively address these long-lived misconceptionsand anchor the conceptual foundation necessary for the mastery of advanced-levelchemistry material.
