investigating widespread student misconceptions in high school chemistry (grade 10)

Authors
Abstract    this study examined four common student misconceptions in 10th-grade high schoolchemistry. to identify and analyze these misconceptions, a multiple-choicequestionnaire was developed covering the concepts of electron configuration, distinguishing between ionic and molecular compounds, stoichiometric calculations(including the mole concept, molecules, and particle count), and comparison ofintermolecular forces. the present study was conducted among 60 tenth grade students.the validity of the test was confirmed by five experienced teachers with more than 15years of teaching experience. furthermore, by calculating a cronbach’s alphacoefficient of 0.811, the reliability of the test items was confirmed. findings indicatedthat a substantial number of students exhibited misconceptions in at least one of theexamined concepts. the misconceptions revealed among this group included:distinguishing between ionic and molecular compounds, the order of electron lossduring cation formation, the correct use of conversion factors in stoichiometriccalculations, prioritizing factors affecting intermolecular forces, confusing the conceptsof mole and molecule, and the inability to identify the constituent particles of acompound. the application of modern teaching methods, particularly the use of visualaids such as images and educational videos that present textbook concepts in a clear andaccessible manner, can play a significant role in addressing many misconceptions.furthermore, adopting structured and step-by-step frameworks for problem-solving,along with encouraging active student participation in classroom discussions, areadditional strategies recommended for reducing these difficulties and improving theoverall quality of learning.
