analysis and remediation of the 'periodic table as a list of atoms' misconception and presentation of educational strategies based on the concept of element and the synthesis of superheavy elements

Authors
Abstract    this study aimed to analyze a common conceptual misunderstanding in secondarychemistry education, originating from a genuine student question: 'can a new atom bediscovered or created and added to the periodic table?' employing a descriptiveanalytical method with a qualitative approach, the research examined the content of the10th-grade chemistry textbook, diagnostic dialogues with students, and scientificsources related to nuclear physics. the findings revealed that the root of thismisconception lies in students' inability to conceptually distinguish between 'atom' and'element,' coupled with a fragmented understanding of the three representational levelsof chemistry. textbook content analysis uncovered that the phrasing of concepts suchas 'atomic number' and the description of the periodic table's organization canperpetuate this error. furthermore, scientific review indicated that the discovery of newnatural elements has concluded, and only the synthesis of superheavy elements innuclear laboratories remains possible. accordingly, educational strategies forremediating this misconception were presented, grounded in three main pillars: themulti-level approach (johnstone), conceptual dialogue, and the design ofrepresentational activities, enabling students to establish a meaningful and lastingconceptual connection between the fundamental concepts of atom, element, and theperiodic table.
