analyzing the mechanism of action of bio-based additives in drilling fluids through molecular dynamics simulation

Authors
Abstract    in the oil- and gas-drilling industry, maintaining rheological stability and controlling fluid loss under high-pressure/high-temperature (hpht) conditions remain fundamental challenges. environmental restrictions on oil-based muds and the thermal instability of synthetic polymers in water-based systems have shifted industry attention toward natural loss-circulation materials (lcms). this study investigates, at the molecular level, how coconut fiber, pine sawdust, and charcoal sawdust influence the rheological and filtration behavior of three drilling-fluid types: bentonite, kcl, and oil-based muds. molecular-dynamics (md) simulations were performed with lammps to quantify the inter-particle interactions and surface adsorption of these additives on a quartz substrate (a representative for reservoir rock) at the nanoscale. radial distribution function (rdf) analysis and density profiles reveal that the fibrous, porous architecture of the bio-additives creates steric hindrance and strong van-der-waals bonding with the borehole surface, yielding an impermeable filter cake and enhanced thermal stability of the fluid. the findings provide microscopic insight into the action of green additives, offering a rational basis for optimizing drilling-fluid formulation.
