investigation of co2 storage processes in underground reservoirs using cmg software

Authors
Abstract    the escalating emission of greenhouse gases—most notably carbon dioxide (co₂), which accounts for approximately 64% of the total anthropogenic greenhouse-gas burden—has emerged as a paramount environmental challenge of the contemporary era. reducing atmospheric co₂ concentration is therefore the fundamental objective of all climate-mitigation strategies. among the innovative and technically effective options for removing this deleterious gas, carbon capture and storage (ccs) in deep geological formations—particularly depleted oil and gas reservoirs and, more importantly, deep saline aquifers—offers one of the largest global storage potentials. this study focuses on the numerical modeling and simulation of co₂ storage in saline aquifers. after a comprehensive literature review and collation of pertinent field data, alternative storage scenarios were evaluated. subsequently, a high-resolution reservoir model of a deep saline formation was developed by synergistically exploiting the specialized capabilities of cmg and matlab. the simulation outputs were rigorously validated against published experimental measurements, revealing excellent agreement and thereby corroborating the reliability of the proposed model. furthermore, the simulations demonstrate that co₂ solubility in brine increases monotonically with pressure while exhibiting an inverse correlation with temperature. these findings provide a robust technical basis for the optimal design and implementation of co₂ storage projects in saline aquifers.
