environmental management in dimension stone quarries: from traditional extraction to green technologies

Authors
Abstract    dimension stone quarrying plays a critical economic role but imposes substantial environmental pressures, including vegetation degradation, soil erosion, water contamination, dust emissions, and inefficient consumption of energy and raw materials. conventional extraction methods, predominantly reliant on manual tools and rudimentary mechanical equipment, exacerbate waste generation and intensify stress on local ecosystems due to limited control over rock fragmentation, high human and fossil energy demands, and suboptimal production efficiency. this study employs a qualitative-analytical framework to assess the environmental implications of traditional quarrying practices and evaluates the potential of integrating green technologies and advanced engineering solutions. the findings reveal that adopting digital and intelligent systems (iot and ai), precision cutting technologies such as diamond wire saws and water jets, water and waste recycling, renewable energy applications, and ecological restoration initiatives can significantly mitigate the environmental footprint of stone extraction while enhancing energy efficiency, reducing material waste, and supporting the economic sustainability of quarries. evidence from domestic and international case studies, including marvdasht limestone, yazd marble, and italian travertine quarries, underscores that the synergistic integration of process engineering, environmental management, and corporate social responsibility constitutes an effective pathway toward sustainable development in the dimension stone sector. despite prevailing technical, economic, and institutional challenges, opportunities such as optimized energy use, improved resource efficiency, and advanced industrial monitoring provide a feasible route toward greener and more sustainable quarrying operations.
