effect of replacing natural aggregates with recycled aggregates on the carbon footprint of concrete

Authors
Abstract    the rapid expansion of the construction industry, along with its significant role in greenhouse gas emissions and natural resources consumption, has necessitated the development of sustainable approaches in the production of construction materials. concrete, as the most widely used construction material, accounts for a substantial share of the global carbon footprint. the use of recycled aggregates as a partial or complete replacement for natural aggregates has gained importance as an effective strategy for reducing carbon emissions. in this study, the effect of replacing natural aggregates with recycled aggregates on the environmental impacts of concrete (carbon emissions) during its production stage was investigated. according to the results, increasing the water-to-cement ratio, while reducing cement content, led to a decrease in carbon emissions. furthermore, at a constant water-to-cement ratio, higher proportions of recycled aggregate resulted in lower carbon emissions. the greatest reduction in carbon emissions was observed in the mix design with the highest water-to-cement ratio (0.6) and complete aggregate replacement (100%). this reduction, even in small amounts, can have a significant impact on global carbon reduction due to the high volume of concrete production. on the other hand, increasing the replacement percentage of natural fine aggregates with recycled fine aggregates led to a higher contribution of cement and natural coarse aggregates to the carbon emissions per cubic meter of concrete; this finding confirms the role of recycled fine aggregates in reducing the contribution of natural fine aggregates to carbon emissions. overall, this study demonstrates that the use of recycled aggregates, when combined with appropriate engineering design, can serve as a reliable and environmentally sustainable approach in concrete production, achieving a balance between environmental considerations and technical performance.
