a review of the applications of pressuremeter testing in geotechnical engineering.

Authors
Abstract    pressuremeter test is one of the most accurate in-situ testing methods in geotechnical engineering, developed by louis menard in 1957 and has been widely used in major infrastructure projects around the world. this article provides a comprehensive review of the types of pressuremeters (menard, self-drilling, conical and full displacement), extractable parameters (limit pressure, pressuremetric modulus, creep pressure, undrained shear strength, initial shear modulus and horizontal consolidation coefficients) and its most important applications in the design of shallow and deep foundations, piles, slope stability, tunneling, offshore structures and problematic soils. it also reviews classical and advanced interpretation methods, implementation limitations and developments of the last two decades, including seismic pressuremeters, digital equipment and the use of artificial intelligence in curve analysis. case studies of large projects such as the channel tunnel, tehran metro, and offshore projects in the persian gulf demonstrate the high accuracy of this test in predicting the actual behavior of soil, especially under lateral loading. the results show that despite its relatively high cost, the pressuremeter is still one of the best tools for reducing uncertainty in design parameters, especially in complex soils and sensitive projects. finally, suggestions are made for the development of cheaper equipment and its optimal combination with other in-situ tests.
