Abstract
historic urban fabrics, as repositories of collective identity and cultural capital, have in recent decades been subjected to pressures from unbalanced development and incompatible interventions. the primary aim of this study is to propose a theoretical and practical framework for guiding infill interventions that balance the preservation of historical values with responsiveness to contemporary needs. the research method is based on documentary analysis and synthesis of findings from authoritative domestic and international sources. data were collected from scholarly articles and specialized books addressing contextualism, infill architecture, and sustainable development. results indicate that the success of infill architecture in historic fabrics depends on three critical dimensions: identity, function, and form. within the identity dimension, reinterpretation of historical and cultural symbols and their representation in design are emphasized. within the functional dimension, adaptation of uses to local needs and reinforcement of social interaction are essential. within the formal dimension, adherence to scale, façade rhythm, skyline continuity, and the use of local materials are identified as fundamental criteria. the novelty of this study lies in the introduction of a three-level model—identity–function–form—which can serve both as a design guideline and as an evaluative tool for the quality of infill projects. this model not only safeguards historical values but also ensures responsiveness to the needs of present and future generations. consequently, contextual reinterpretation through infill architecture can be regarded as a practical strategy for achieving sustainable development in historic urban fabrics.
