investigating the structural behavior of multi-storey parking lots under progressive failure scenarios with a reliability approach

Authors
Abstract    parking lots with a combined bending frame and shear wall system and analyzes the effect of removing key columns including side, middle and corner columns. the importance of this issue stems from the fact that the sudden removal of load-bearing members due to accidents such as heavy vehicle collisions, internal explosions, or construction errors can cause a chain reaction and reduce the stability of the structure. the results show that the vulnerability of the structure to the removal of columns increases with the number of floors. in the three-story model, the removal of the side column increased the probability of instability by about 15%, while this value reached 20% and 27% in the six- and nine-story models. also, the structural response at higher floors was greater due to the increase in overall mass and stiffness, and placed greater demands on the remaining members. the analyses indicate that the removal of the side and corner columns create the most critical situation and cause a significant increase in the rotational moment and a decrease in the residual capacity of the structure. in contrast, the removal of the middle column created a more balanced behavior. overall, the results emphasize the importance of strengthening critical members and performance-based design to reduce the likelihood of progressive failure in multi-storey car parks.
