comparative approaches to seismic design in prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction (ppvc) and the experiences of china, singapore, and the united states

Authors
Abstract    prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction (ppvc) has emerged as one of the major innovations in modular construction, attracting significant attention over the past decade in the fields of seismic resilience and sustainable development. this review article adopts a comparative approach to examine policies, seismic codes, and research studies related to the seismic performance of ppvc structures in three countries: china, singapore, and the united states. in china, the focus on seismically active regions and the requirements of the gb 50011-2010 code highlight critical challenges in seismic design. in singapore, governmental policies and post-occupancy studies reflect efforts to enhance quality and safety in high-rise ppvc projects. in the united states, codes such as asce and ibc, together with performance-based design approaches, provide a comprehensive framework for assessing the vulnerability of modular structures. the findings of this review indicate that each country, depending on its seismic hazard conditions and construction policies, has adopted distinct strategies for the development and seismic safety of ppvc systems. ultimately, the article emphasizes the necessity of harmonizing standards, improving connection systems, and utilizing smart materials as key pathways for future research and development.
