evaluation of performance-based vs. prescriptive fire design in composite structures

Authors
Abstract    structural fire design via the prescriptive method, although common, is not necessarily economical or optimal. in this paper, using the performance-based design (pbd) approach and leveraging the tensile membrane action of concrete slabs, the fire performance of an 11-story residential composite (steel-concrete) building was evaluated. a comprehensive framework comprising life cycle cost analysis (lcca) and life cycle assessment (lca) was developed to compare different design scenarios. the accuracy of the numerical modeling was validated using results from nist full-scale tests. results indicated that the pbd approach, by eliminating redundant fire protection, reduces the initial construction cost by 7% and the total present value life cycle cost (pvlcc) by up to 51% compared to the prescriptive method. furthermore, from an environmental perspective, this method leads to a 35% reduction in greenhouse gas (co2) emissions. this research demonstrates that pbd is a sustainable and cost-effective solution for enhancing building resilience against fire.
