review of phase change materials (pcm): a new generation of smart materials in building energy management

Authors
Abstract    phase change materials (pcm) as a new generation of smart materials have gained a prominent position in building energy management. the global energy crisis and the growing demand for sustainable buildings have intensified the necessity of employing materials with high thermal capacity. pcms, with their ability to store and release heat during phase transitions, enable the moderation of temperature fluctuations and the reduction of heating and cooling loads. this comprehensive review examines the scientific foundations of pcms, including the thermodynamic principles of phase change, material classifications (organic, inorganic, and eutectic), and stabilization technologies such as micro- and nano-encapsulation. furthermore, the enhancement of thermal conductivity through nanoparticles and the integration of pcms with advanced materials such as smart concrete, prefabricated polymers, and surface coatings are analyzed. the practical section of the paper highlights the role of pcms in building envelopes, including walls, roofs, floors, and responsive façades, and elaborates on their interaction with hvac systems. performance evaluation is presented through numerical simulations using energyplus and comsol, quantitative indicators of energy consumption reduction, and life-cycle and cost analyses. the paper also addresses implementation challenges such as cyclic stability, initial cost, and the absence of comprehensive standards, while outlining future perspectives in the development of pcms responsive to multiple stimuli. in conclusion, the study demonstrates that pcms can play a pivotal role in achieving net-zero energy buildings and guide future research toward composite materials and advanced technologies such as 3d printing.
