Abstract
this paper introduces and explains a graph-based approach for the topological representation of parking layouts in residential apartment blocks. the aim is to demonstrate how an architectural plan can be converted into a graph and used as a suitable substrate for analysing spatial relations and for applying computational methods in design generation. within an applied case study, the main spaces of a sample parking layout are first identified and their spatial extents are delimited. representative points are then selected and an adjacency graph is constructed, through which the topological structure of the layout is extracted. by examining graph isomorphs and redrawing the graph, the independence of the topological layer from the geometric layer is clarified. subsequently, a minimal graph corresponding to a single parking unit is derived and proposed as a basis for chromosome encoding in a genetic algorithm. the results indicate that the proposed approach enables the generation of diverse geometric layouts while preserving a fixed spatial structure, and can therefore serve as a foundation for developing intelligent tools for the analysis and design of parking layouts.
