laboratory investigation of the physical properties of base materials in full depth reclamation (fdr) process with a sustainable development perspective

Authors
Abstract    in recent years, sustainable approaches to pavement rehabilitation have gained attention due to environmental and economic considerations. among these methods, full depth reclamation (fdr) enables in-place recycling of deteriorated road materials. this study introduces the preliminary phase of a project aimed at utilizing paper sludge ash (psa) as a sustainable stabilizing additive in the fdr process, replacing cement and other conventional binders. to assess the base materials prior to stabilization, laboratory tests including particle size distribution, specific gravity, and standard compaction were conducted. the soil was classified according to the uscs system and analyzed based on the permissible gradation outlined in iran’s road construction regulations, with respect to its suitability for fdr applications. the results indicated that the base materials exhibit acceptable compaction behavior and uniform physical properties, providing a reliable foundation for subsequent durability and mechanical performance evaluations. this preliminary investigation highlights the potential of psa as an environmentally friendly and effective alternative for pavement recycling, contributing to material enhancement and sustainable development.
