Abstract
progressive collapse, as one of the most complex challenges in the design of tall buildings, occurs when the local failure of a load-bearing member leads to a chain reaction of failures and ultimately the complete collapse of the structure. in this study, the behavior of a 15-story steel building with a square plan and central courtyard was numerically investigated under the scenario of critical column removal at the ground floor. the structural model was developed using software, and a quasi-static analysis was performed to evaluate alternative load paths, local deformations, and collapse mechanisms. the results indicated that the building’s geometry and the presence of the central courtyard, along with the location of the removed column, play a decisive role in the failure propagation pattern. in the intact state, the critical load factor of the structure was λ = 10814.13 tons. removal of selected columns significantly reduced the load-bearing capacity; for example, removal of column b-1 reduced the critical load factor to 5717.9 tons with a sensitivity index of 0.47, representing the highest vulnerability among the studied cases. similarly, removal of column c-3 resulted in a critical load factor of 5418.3 tons and a sensitivity index of 0.50, identifying it as a key element. in contrast, removal of columns a-1 and d-3 caused smaller reductions, with sensitivity indices of 0.34 and 0.36, respectively. these quantitative findings demonstrate that the location of the removed column directly affects stress concentration, redistribution of load paths in peripheral frames, and the overall stability of the structure. furthermore, the type of lateral load-resisting system and connection details had a direct impact on the energy absorption capacity and the ability of the structure to control failure. this study highlights the importance of performance-based design, the creation of multiple load paths, and the use of targeted bracing systems for strengthening tall buildings. the findings can contribute to practical strategies for enhancing urban resilience and reducing the risk of progressive collapse in critical structures.
