Abstract
microplastics, as pollutants that have received significant attention in recent years, are particles smaller than 5 mm and represent an important issue in terms of environmental impact and the operation of municipal wastewater treatment plants. the primary sources of these particles include the washing of synthetic textiles, tire abrasion, cosmetic products, and the degradation of larger plastics. their high chemical stability, low density, and ability to adsorb other contaminants have led to the accumulation of microplastics in wastewater and sewage sludge, creating new pathways for the transport of heavy metals and organic compounds. existing studies have shown that although conventional wastewater treatment plants play an important role in reducing the microplastic load, smaller particles easily pass through these systems and accumulate in secondary processes such as activated sludge. common removal methods include physical, chemical, and biological processes. recently, the use of nanomaterials and hybrid biological processes—especially anaerobic systems—has gained attention for enhancing efficiency, improving process stability, and in some cases providing more cost-effective operation. this article presents a comprehensive review of the sources, types, removal methods, and potential of various processes for microplastic removal from municipal wastewater. additionally, challenges and innovative approaches such as advanced oxidation, bioelectrochemical methods, and bionanomaterial-based systems are discussed for improving and developing efficient and environmentally friendly treatment systems.
