Abstract
accurate soil classification according to the unified soil classification system (uscs) is a preliminary and critical step in geotechnical design. conventional methods rely on the engineer's interpretation of field test results, such as the standard penetration test (spt) and cone penetration test (cpt), which can be subjective and time-consuming. this paper examines the application of artificial intelligence (ai) methods as a powerful tool for rapid and automated soil classification. in this context, two interpretable algorithms—decision tree and random forest—were trained to classify soil types based on a synthetic but realistic dataset containing parameters such as n₆₀, fine content, cone resistance (q_c), friction ratio (r_f), and pore water pressure (u). the developed models were evaluated on a separate test subset, where the random forest algorithm demonstrated superior performance with an accuracy of 91.7%, compared to the decision tree algorithm with an accuracy of 87.3%. feature importance analysis revealed that fine content and cone resistance were the most influential parameters in the classification process. although these methods offer significant speed and consistency, the paper emphasizes important limitations, including dependence on the quality of training data and the necessity of integrating engineering judgment with model outputs. this study provides a transparent and step-by-step framework to introduce students to the development of ai models for geotechnical problems.
