evaluation of the effect of zeolite on the mechanical properties and durability of electrically conductive cementitious composites

Authors
Abstract    with the growing demand for smart and sustainable infrastructures, the development of conductive cementitious composites that simultaneously provide adequate mechanical strength and electrical transport capability has gained significant importance. this study investigates the effects of natural zeolite and graphite powder on the mechanical and electrical properties of cementitious composites. twelve mix designs were prepared, incorporating three levels of cement replacement with zeolite (0%, 10%, and 20%) and four levels of graphite addition (0%, 4%, 8%, and 12% by cement weight). after curing, the specimens were tested at 7 and 28 days for compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength, as well as electrical resistivity and conductivity. the results showed that replacing cement with up to 20% zeolite improved compressive and flexural strength at later ages due to its pozzolanic reaction and filler effect, whereas graphite alone reduced mechanical strengths but significantly increased electrical conductivity. the combined use of both materials demonstrated that incorporating 20% zeolite together with 4–8% graphite provides a desirable balance between mechanical strength and electrical performance. moreover, the strong correlations observed between compressive, flexural, and electrical properties (with correlation coefficients of at least 0.89) indicate that variations in mechanical and electrical behavior are governed by the proportions of zeolite and graphite, and that an optimized combination can enhance the overall performance of the composite.
