negative-carbon structures, fundamentals of co₂ capture processes, and feasibility of implementation in iran

Authors
Abstract    the construction industry is one of the major sources of carbon dioxide emissions in iran, and the development of negative-carbon structures can contribute to reducing environmental impacts while enhancing material durability and efficiency. this study investigates the implementation of negative-carbon structural systems in iran through the use of innovative materials and low-carbon construction methods. first, an overview of co₂ capture and storage technologies—including industrial waste utilization, carbon capture, utilization and storage (ccus), and direct air capture (dac)—is presented. subsequently, suitable materials and mixtures for producing negative-carbon concrete and masonry units, as well as practical pathways for their application in iran, are analyzed. the challenges, opportunities, and strategies for advancing this technology are also discussed, and a step-by-step roadmap for its deployment in the country is proposed. in addition, the study emphasizes the role of local capacities and collaborative potential between academia and industry in promoting these technologies. the results indicate that by leveraging local resources, supportive policies, and appropriate technical solutions, the development of sustainable, low-carbon structures with significant economic and environmental benefits is achievable in iran.
