Abstract
the aim of this study is to identify and analyze sustainable design principles in residential buildings by utilizing vernacular architecture in the cold climate of hamedan, iran. in this research, the theoretical foundations of sustainable architecture and climatic adaptability in cold regions are first reviewed. then, the characteristics of hamedan’s vernacular architecture—such as thick walls, compact forms, central courtyards, and limited openings—are examined in detail. the research method is descriptive–analytical, and data have been collected through library studies and field observations. a comparative analysis between traditional and contemporary buildings reveals that many vernacular strategies, such as the use of thermal mass and optimal building orientation, can be reinterpreted in modern design to effectively reduce energy consumption and enhance thermal comfort. the results indicate that integrating vernacular architectural elements into contemporary design processes provides a sustainable and efficient approach to architecture in iran’s cold regions.
