the effect of surrounding soil stiffness on underground floors on the seismic performance of structures

Authors
Abstract    in seismic design, the presence of soil beneath the foundation and surrounding the basement can alter the seismic performance. design codes allow the base level to be considered at the ground surface if the soil surrounding the basement is adequately compacted; however, the precise criteria and implications of this assumption are not clear. in this research, a 10-story structure was investigated by varying parameters such as soil shear wave velocity, thickness of the perimeter basement walls, earthquake intensity, and the number of basement floors under seven earthquake records. three conditions were considered: fixed base, shallow foundation, and foundation with basement. the results indicate that the model with surrounding soil and a basement exhibits less displacement, and drift compared to the shallow foundation model. increasing the shear wave velocity from 100 to 200 m/s reduces displacement but increases drift. increasing the thickness of the perimeter wall from 10 to 20 cm reduces displacement and also decreases drift in the middle and upper stories. increasing the number of basement floors up to three levels reduces displacement furthermore, increasing the earthquake intensity leads to an increase in displacement, and drift in the model with surrounding soil compared to the shallow foundation model.
