Abstract
this study aims to investigate the role and challenges of novel technologies in the iranian construction industry the design of high-rise buildings faces the fundamental challenge of balancing structural safety against lateral loads with economic and constructability efficiency. the selection of the structural system, as one of the earliest and most critical engineering decisions, plays a determining role in the performance, cost, and construction process of the project. the main objective of this research is to conduct an analytical and comparative study on the role of various structural systems (including braced frames, shear walls, core-outrigger systems, and tubular systems) on key structural performance indices (drift and base shear) and their economic and constructability implications in tall buildings. this research employs a descriptive-analytical approach, relying on an extensive review of theoretical foundations and prominent research background in structural engineering. to this end, the three main design requirements (stiffness, strength, and ductility) are first explained, followed by the introduction and analysis of the most important lateral load resisting structural systems. finally, the impact of selecting each system on economic considerations (material cost, foundation, usable floor area) and constructability (construction speed, labor, architectural flexibility) is evaluated. the results indicate that with increasing height, traditional structural systems lose their efficiency, and the use of composite and advanced systems such as tubular systems, belt trusses, and braced cores becomes essential to simultaneously provide stiffness and control lateral displacements. each structural system possesses a unique 'performance-economic profile'; for instance, tubular systems offer high stiffness while providing the maximum internal usable area, whereas braced frame systems have significant advantages in terms of construction speed and material cost.
