electromagnetic performance of smart concretes containing ferrite and graphene for the protection of critical infrastructure

Authors
Abstract    smart concretes reinforced with ferrite nanoparticles and graphene sheets have emerged as novel composite materials exhibiting complex electromagnetic behavior, attracting increasing attention from researchers. this study aims to provide a comprehensive analytical assessment of the electromagnetic performance of such concretes, focusing on their potential for shielding and mitigation against electromagnetic interference (emi) in critical infrastructure applications. conducted through a systematic literature review, this research analyzes authoritative sources in the fields of magnetic nanomaterials, nanoelectronics, wave physics, and advanced construction materials. the findings indicate that an optimized combination of ferrite nanoparticles (such as nickel-zinc ferrite) and graphene sheets enhances both dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability, resulting in broadband absorption behavior and significant reflection loss reduction in smart concretes. furthermore, multilayer ferrite-graphene structures with optimized thicknesses ranging from 10 to 20 mm demonstrate high-frequency absorption efficiency, which can be interpreted using wave transmission and resonant loss models. spectral response analyses and experimental data reported in the literature suggest that uniform distribution of magnetic and conductive phases, along with the prevention of agglomeration, plays a critical role in achieving consistent electromagnetic performance. in conclusion, nanoengineered concretes incorporating ferrite and graphene represent a promising class of multifunctional materials, offering tunable absorption characteristics and quasi-metamaterial behavior. these materials are considered advanced candidates for large-scale electromagnetic shielding in structural engineering.
