Abstract
the rapid expansion of urbanization and the building sector’s dependence on fossil fuels have positioned co₂ reduction as a central priority in sustainable development policies. within this context, vertical greening systems (vgs) have emerged as a novel strategy, gaining prominence through both the direct sequestration of co₂ and the indirect reductions achieved via energy savings. this study aims to evaluate the performance of vgs at the building scale and to propose a quantitative framework for their assessment and optimization across diverse climates. the methodology integrates a systematic literature review, analysis of carbon uptake and energy-saving mechanisms, simulation using energypluse and envi-met, vegetation assessment, and field monitoring with co₂ sensors. findings indicate that, depending on plant species, system typology, and maintenance conditions, vgs can annually sequester between 90 and 2,663 kg of co₂ and reduce cooling energy demand by up to 23%. despite these benefits, challenges remain, including embodied carbon of materials, water demand, and high initial costs; however, these can be mitigated through lightweight modular designs, sustainable materials, and smart irrigation systems. the results highlight the necessity of integrating green façades into carbon management strategies, life-cycle assessment, and economic analysis from the early stages of design.
