Abstract
in this study, the dynamic characteristics of sixteen major iranian earthquakes were evaluated based on recorded accelerograms and the analysis of key seismic parameters with respect to soil type. data were obtained from the building and housing research center database and categorized into two soil classes: type i (rock) and type ii (soil). the analyses indicated that in type i soil, the predominant period is shorter, and the effective acceleration, cumulative energy, and displacement are significantly lower, reflecting higher damping capacity and faster transmission of seismic waves. in contrast, type ii soil, characterized by a longer predominant period and substantial increases in energy and displacement indices, tends to amplify seismic motions and induce more severe structural damage. correlation results revealed a strong dependence of energy and displacement on predominant period, peak acceleration and peak velocity. the statistical differences between the two soil classes highlight the necessity of adopting site-specific design spectra and ensuring adequate structural retrofitting in regions with soft soil conditions. by utilizing indigenous data and advanced signal processing, this research provides practical insights for improving the nation’s seismic safety and enhancing earthquake hazard assessment in structural systems.
