Abstract
monitoring volatile organic compounds (vocs) in indoor environments has become a major research priority due to their well-documented long-term health impacts. in this context, low-cost sensors are increasingly used as alternatives or complements to reference methods such as gc–ms and professional pid devices. this systematic review of studies from germany, switzerland, the netherlands, the united states, canada, china, south korea and japan shows that metal-oxide (mox) sensors, when combined with data-correction models and machine-learning algorithms, can provide reasonably accurate estimates of tvoc levels in offices, homes and schools. field experiments also indicate that low-cost pid sensors are suitable for capturing short-term voc peaks in high-risk spaces such as kitchens, laboratories and service facilities. experiences with sensor networks integrated with deep-learning prediction models highlight their potential for large-scale, low-cost indoor air-quality monitoring. nevertheless, strong dependence on temperature, humidity, interfering gases and sensor drift requires careful field calibration and co-location with reference instruments. overall, properly deployed low-cost sensors offer an effective and scalable option for indoor voc monitoring and smart ventilation control.
