a comprehensive review of the effects of heat on the mechanical performance and fire-resistant behavior of magnesium oxide panels with emphasis on the role of thickness and coating type

Authors
Abstract    magnesium oxide (mgo) panels have emerged as an innovative construction material due to their exceptional fire resistance and favorable mechanical properties. this study presents a comprehensive review of the thermal effects on the structural performance and fire-resistant behavior of mgo panels, with particular attention to the influence of panel thickness and coating configuration. a synthesis of research published between 2010 and 2025 demonstrates that mgo panels can tolerate temperatures of approximately 800–1200 °c without significant loss of structural integrity. their high melting point, near 2800 °c, further contributes to their superior thermal stability. evidence indicates that increasing panel thickness from 6 mm to 18 mm can extend fire-resistance duration from 30–60 minutes to nearly 4 hours. additionally, the application of four-layer glass-fiber mesh reinforcement enhances flexural strength to values exceeding 16 mpa and increases impact strength to over 25 mpa. under standardized assessments, including astm e119 and en 13501-1, mgo panels consistently achieve an a1 non-combustible classification, exhibiting a flame spread index of 0–25 and a smoke-developed index of 0–450.
