a review on the applications of nanomaterials in soil remediation.

Authors
Abstract    soil contamination, as one of the most critical environmental challenges of the 21st century, poses a serious threat to food security, human health, and natural ecosystems. in recent years, nanomaterials—due to their exceptionally high surface-to-volume ratio, remarkable reactivity, and tunable properties—have emerged as one of the most promising tools for the remediation of contaminated soils. this review article provides a comprehensive examination of the applications of nanomaterials in soil decontamination and introduces commonly used nanomaterials, including zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nzvi) and their modified derivatives (s-nzvi, bimetallic nzvi), carbon-based nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes, graphene, and nanoscale biochar), metal oxide nanoparticles (tio₂, fe₃o₄, ceo₂), and hybrid nanocomposites. the main mechanisms involved in pollutant removal—such as adsorption, chemical reduction, advanced oxidation, photocatalysis, and stabilization/immobilization—are discussed, and their effectiveness in removing heavy metals, petroleum hydrocarbons, pesticides, chlorinated compounds, and emerging contaminants (pfas and pharmaceuticals) is evaluated. additionally, the latest advancements from 2023 to 2025, including sulfided nano-iron with 10–100 times higher efficiency, nanobiochar, recyclable magnetic nanomaterials, and green nanomaterials synthesized using plant extracts, are described. finally, the advantages, limitations, ecotoxicological impacts, and field-scale challenges of using nanomaterials are analyzed, and the future outlook of this technology for sustainable agriculture and green soil remediation is presented.
