removal of microplastics from municipal wastewater sludge

Authors
Abstract    microplastics, as persistent micropollutants in wastewater treatment systems, have raised increasing concerns in municipal wastewater sludge management due to their accumulation in sludge and resistance to removal through conventional treatment processes. the complexity of sludge structure, interactions between microplastic particles and biological layers, and the adhesive behavior of these contaminants have made their removal under typical operational conditions a significant challenge. the objective of this study is to systematically review microplastic removal technologies from wastewater sludge, to analyze their performance limitations, and to evaluate their applicability at the industrial scale. accordingly, a range of physical, chemical, electrochemical, advanced adsorption, oxidation, and biological processes were examined based on the content of analytical studies and available documented sources, in order to clarify the role of sludge characteristics, operational conditions, and the consequences of secondary waste generation on the efficiency of removal processes. the results indicated that despite demonstrating satisfactory removal efficiency under laboratory conditions, many technologies currently exhibit limited stability for large-scale application due to their sensitivity to sludge quality fluctuations and operational costs. therefore, the development of hybrid approaches, the application of cost-effective and stable systems, and a focused emphasis on controlling particle mobility and secondary release may provide a more effective strategy for managing microplastics in municipal wastewater sludge.
