effect of eremurus stabilization on the shear strength of fine soil

Authors
Abstract    improving the mechanical properties of fine-grained soils, especially shear strength, is one of the major challenges in geotechnical engineering. this study investigates the effect of a natural additive, eremurus, on the shear strength of fine-grained soils. soil samples with varying weight percentages of eremurus (0, 1, 3, 5, and 6 percent) were prepared and cured for periods of 7, 14, and 28 days, and then subjected to direct shear tests. the results showed that adding the eremurus has a statistically significant effect on shear strength parameters. in general, soil cohesion (c) increased with higher starch content (up to an optimal point) and curing time, while the internal friction angle (φ) decreased. the greatest increase in cohesion occurred in the sample containing 5 percent starch after 14 days of curing. although a decrease in φ was observed, the notable improvement in cohesion led to an overall increase in soil shear strength, especially at lower normal stresses. this study indicates that eremurus adhesive can be used as a natural, economical, and environmentally friendly material for improving fine-grained soils.
