probabilistic performance evaluation of steel moment-resisting frames designed for different design drifts

Authors
Abstract    in previous research, analyses have mostly focused on the efficiency of plastic-based performance-based seismic design for steel structures. however, the performance of this design method under different seismic intensities has not been thoroughly evaluated. this study aims to assess the effectiveness of the plastic design method via a probabilistic framework that incorporates uncertainty in earthquake intensity and ground motion records. to this end, a four-story building with a steel moment-resisting frame is designed according to the plastic performance-based design for target inter-story drifts of 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, and 3.0% of floor height — under a seismic hazard corresponding to a 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years. fragility curves of the designed structures are then derived using incremental dynamic analysis (ida) and monte carlo simulation. the seismic performance of each design is evaluated based on these fragility curves. results indicate that as the target relative drift ratio increases, the structure becomes more vulnerable to seismic hazard, leading to a higher probability of failure.
Keywords performance-based seismic design; probabilistic performance evaluation; fragility curve; target interstory drift ratios
