analyzing the correspondence between the language level of the eighth grade science textbook and students' abilities: a quantitative study based on the mclaughlin index

Authors
Abstract    the present study aimed to measure the readability of the eighth grade science textbook in three sections:chemistry, biology, and geology. this study, with a descriptive-analytical approach and based on a quantitativemethod, used the mclaughlin index as one of the most reliable tools for measuring the linguistic difficulty oftexts. the research population included all chapters of the book, and from each chapter, three ten-sentence textsamples from the beginning, middle, and end of the chapter were randomly selected and analyzed. the mainevaluation criteria were counting polysyllabic words and calculating grade level indicators, minimum requiredage, and ideal age level based on the mclaughlin index. the findings showed that in most chapters, the squareroot of difficult words is in the range of 6 to 7, which indicates the level of text readability higher than eighthgrade and mainly in the range of ninth and tenth grades.although the minimum age required for initialcomprehension of the material is consistent with the chronological age of students in this grade, the ideal agefor deep and independent comprehension of the text was often estimated to be between 15 and 16 years. theseresults indicate a significant discrepancy between the language level of the textbook and the reading ability ofeighth grade students. a comparative study of the sections also showed that the chemistry and geology chaptersare more difficult than the biology section in terms of the density of specialized vocabulary and linguisticcomplexity. overall, the findings indicate a significant gap between the language level of the textbook and thereading ability of students and emphasize the need to revise the content, simplify the sentence structure, andadjust specialized vocabulary to improve the effectiveness of experimental science education.
