Abstract
in recent years, health literacy has emerged as one of the fundamental components of general education inschools worldwide, and its inclusion in science education has become a critical necessity. despite itsimportance, teachers’ lived experiences indicate that the true status of this concept has not yet been adequatelystrengthened within the curriculum.the present study aimed to explore science teachers’ experiences and perceptions regarding the status of healthliteracy education. the findings reveal that teachers describe health-related content in science textbooks aslimited, fragmented, and largely disconnected from students’ everyday lives. in particular, these topics aresometimes addressed only briefly and often placed in the final chapters of textbooks.in addition to these content-related issues, a lack of educational facilities—such as insufficient laboratoryequipment, limited instructional resources, time constraints, and inadequate space for practical activities—constitutes a major challenge for teachers. furthermore, the absence of specialized health educators andinsufficient structural support have placed additional burdens on teachers. many participants emphasized thatprofessional development and training programs for effective health education are not adequately implemented, which forces them to rely on traditional teaching methods.overall, the findings suggest that achieving effective health literacy education requires revising sciencetextbook content, strengthening educational infrastructure, and providing professional development programsfor teachers to ensure that health education aligns with students’ real needs.
