Abstract
science education, in addition to conveying scientific knowledge, plays an important role in fostering students’cognitive skills such as observation, analysis, reasoning, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. theaim of this study is to examine the relationship between science education and the enhancement of cognitiveskills based on the objectives of iran’s national curriculum and to analyze the content of the sixth-gradeelementary science textbook. first, the theoretical assumptions regarding the role of science education incognitive development are reviewed. then, the content of the sixth-grade science textbook is analyzed in termsof its support for different levels of thinking, based on bloom’s taxonomy and cognition-oriented approaches.the analysis shows that although the textbook provides opportunities for observation, modeling, hypothesisformation, and experimentation in some lessons, its overall approach remains relatively knowledge-centered,with fewer analytical and problem-based activities. the results indicate that strengthening cognitive skillsrequires revising learning activity designs and shifting the teacher’s role from a mere knowledge transmitter toa facilitator of cognitive processes. finally, recommendations are provided to enhance cognition-orientedapproaches in science education.
