implications of the constructivist approach in elementary experimental science education

Authors
Abstract    the aim of the present study is to systematically analyze the implications of constructivism theory forelementary science education and to explain its practical dimensions in learning design, teacher role-building,student agency, and evaluation system. this study, which was conducted with a grounded-theoretical approachand the method of documentary analysis and qualitative content analysis, presents a conceptual framework forthe application of this theory in elementary science classes by examining the key sources of constructivism inscience education. the findings showed that constructivism requires redefining the role of the teacher from aknowledge transmitter to a learning designer and facilitator; in such a way that he guides the process ofmeaning-making by providing cognitive supports, managing cognitive balance, and utilizing errors as learningopportunities. in contrast, the role of the student is promoted to an active learner, explorer, and responsible forthe cognitive process, and he actively constructs scientific knowledge through hypothesis generation, experimental design, scientific discourse exchange, and reconstruction of his mental models. the results alsoshowed that the constructivist learning environment in science is based on contextualized, project-based, andsocial interaction activities, and the use of technology, multimedia tools, and diverse resources enhances thequality of the scientific experience. in addition, authentic and process-oriented evaluation is an essentialelement of this approach, and through portfolios, concept maps, and self-assessment, it reveals the path ofstudent cognitive growth. overall, the present study emphasizes that constructivism is a powerful frameworkfor transforming elementary science education, although its implementation requires professionalempowerment of teachers and redesign of the learning and evaluation environment in accordance with theprinciples of constructivist learning.
