Abstract
this study aimed to analyze the longitudinal coherence of thermochemistry-related concepts in the secondaryschool curriculum and to clarify the developmental trajectory of students’ conceptual understanding. using aqualitative approach and a descriptive–analytical method, the content of science textbooks for grades seven tonine, chemistry textbooks for grades ten to twelve, and the tenth-grade physics textbook was systematicallyexamined. key concepts related to heat, temperature, energy, phase changes, specific heat, heat capacity, enthalpy, hess’s law, and thermochemical equations were extracted and their relationships were organizedusing novak’s concept-mapping model to illustrate how these ideas evolve from descriptive explanations toanalytical and computational treatments. the findings showed that concepts of heat and energy in lowersecondary science textbooks are introduced qualitatively and through observable phenomena, providingstudents with an initial foundation in thermochemistry. in the next stage, the tenth-grade physics textbookdevelops these concepts within a quantitative and macroscopic framework, offering more precise explanationsof topics such as specific heat, heat capacity, and energy transfer. finally, the eleventh-grade chemistrytextbook presents these concepts at a microscopic and computational level, deepening students’ understandingof reaction energetics and enthalpy. overall, although the progression from science to physics and chemistrygenerally follows a logical sequence, certain discontinuities in the transition of concepts across grade levelswere identified. the study suggests that strengthening conceptual linkages and incorporating concept maps intocurriculum design can enhance cognitive coherence and promote a more structured understanding of energyand thermochemistry among students.
