environmental education, social responsibility, and life skills: a platform for changing attitudes and integration in experimental science education

Authors
Abstract    global crises such as global warming and pollution and poor environmental performance among studentshave necessitated the need to redefine the role of science education. environmental education is no longermarginal, but a fundamental ability that includes critical thinking and responsible action, because a healthyenvironment is a prerequisite for sustainable development and proper education can lead to behaviormodification. the research method used in this study is a systematic review, in which 24 sources werestudied. therefore, the purpose of this systematic review is to examine practical frameworks and strategiesfor the purposeful integration of the three elements of environmental education, social responsibility, andlife skills in the science curriculum to help educate a generation with deep scientific literacy and high socioenvironmental awareness. the results of the analyses confirm that age-appropriate environmental educationcan significantly improve environmental attitudes and performance. the findings emphasize practicalenvironmental awareness and integration with environmental issues. however, research indicates a deepgap between knowledge and practice; so that although students have appropriate scores in cognitive andattitudinal domains, they show a very poor level in the component of environmental behavior andperformance. this functional deficiency is due to the lack of sufficient attention in the course content topractical and decision-making skills and action-oriented dimensions; therefore, to promote action-orientedenvironmental literacy, education must go beyond mere knowledge to cover all three cognitive, attitudinal, and behavioral domains and focus on context-based education, systems thinking, and evidence-basedproblem solving.
