modeling payment guarantee insurance using game theory in innovative supply chain financing

Authors
Abstract    small and medium-sized enterprises (smes) often face severe constraints in accessing financial resources. in iran, research and technology funds (rtfs), as non-bank financial institutions, play a pivotal role in financing these enterprises by issuing payment guarantees. however, the prohibition on deposit-taking and their limited risk-bearing capacity makes them vulnerable to guarantee defaults. this study develops a theoretical model based on a multilateral stackelberg game to analyze the interactions among four key players: the buyer, the crowdfunding platform, the rtf as the guarantor, and the insurer. the model considers two scenarios—without insurance and with insurance—and derives the profit functions of each actor in both cases. the analytical results indicate that while insurance reduces the rtf’s profit, it enhances its financial resilience against defaults by lowering the variance of potential losses. in such circumstances, the internal welfare of the supply chain declines unless the benefits of risk reduction are transferred to other actors through supportive policies or collaborativee contracts. sensitivity analysis further reveals that platform and guarantor fees, as well as the level of the insurance premium, are critical determinants in shaping the “insurance cooperation zone.” these findings underscore the necessity of policymaker intervention in designing insurance subsidies and risk-sharing mechanisms to ensure the sustainable development of innovation financing.
