developing hypothesis-formulation skills in secondary students through simple physics experiments: a qualitative study

Authors
Abstract    this study investigates how simple and low-cost physics experiments can foster hypothesis-formulation skills and support the development of scientific thinking among secondary-school students. hypothesis formation is a central component of the scientific inquiry cycle, linking observation, prediction, and evidence-based reasoning. using a qualitative descriptive–analytic design, five classroom-feasible physics experiments were selected to provide students with opportunities to formulate hypotheses and test them through hands-on investigation. data were collected through classroom observations, analysis of teachers’ lesson plans, and semi-structured interviews, and were analyzed using the five-phase inquiry-based learning model (5e): engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation. the research population consisted of physics teachers and upper secondary school students from three public high schools in yazd city. from this population, 12 students and 45 teachers were purposefully selected and participated in the study over a three‑month period. findings indicate that beginning instruction with observable and relatable phenomena, followed by structured opportunities for hypothesis testing, significantly enhances students’ reasoning skills, data analysis abilities, and engagement in scientific discussion. the results further demonstrate that emphasizing the process from questioning to hypothesis and experimentation is more effective than direct instruction of scientific conclusions. it is therefore recommended that physics teachers adopt a facilitative role and use simple, accessible experiments to provide students with authentic opportunities to practice scientific thinking and hypothesis formation.
